{"id":4686,"date":"2026-07-16T17:38:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T17:38:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=4686"},"modified":"2026-07-16T17:38:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T17:38:44","slug":"ex-pastor-accused-of-pushing-wife-off-cliff-died-in-an-unusual-way-sheriff-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=4686","title":{"rendered":"Ex-pastor accused of pushing wife off cliff died in an unusual way, sheriff says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>The former youth pastor suspected of pushing his wife off a Utah cliff died by suicide in a very unusual way, said the sheriff who oversees Las Vegas\u2019 jails.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=4685\">California rental ads would have to disclose if pictures used AI, under new bill<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill declined to give details of David Vander Meer\u2019s death while in custody last month, but during an interview Wednesday with the Las Vegas Review-Journal he said, \u201cWhat I will tell you \u2026 is that he strangulated himself, and he did it in what I would say was a unique and novel way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said longtime corrections officers had \u201cnever seen that particular method.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Las Vegas police reported on June 25 that \u201ca 49-year-old male inmate\u201d died in a hospital after being found the previous night with \u201cself-sustained injuries\u201d at the Clark County Detention Center.<\/p>\n<p>It was later confirmed that the inmate was Vander Meer, who had been arrested June 22 at the yoga studio where he worked in Summerlin, Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 20 years after his first wife died after a fall from the iconic Angel\u2019s Landing tower in Zion National Park, he was charged with her murder.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation into Bernadette Vander Meer\u2019s death \u2014 which was initially called accidental \u2014 was revived because of a tip from the senior pastor of a church where David Vander Meer had led the youth group.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=4683\">Back-to-back humpback whale strandings reported on Northern California beaches<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pastor\u2019s suspicion that the death was not an accident led investigators to interview Vander Meer\u2019s second wife, with whom he reportedly had sex while he was married and she was a teen in the church group, said an affidavit from the Washington County Attorney\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>At the time of his arrest, Vander Meer worked as a guidance counselor at a Las Vegas charter school, as well as at the yoga studio.<\/p>\n<p>McMahill told the Review-Journal that the circumstances of the death remain under investigation.
