{"id":463,"date":"2026-05-25T23:38:32","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T23:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=463"},"modified":"2026-05-25T23:38:32","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T23:38:32","slug":"nasdaq-gets-approval-from-sec-to-list-bitcoin-index-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=463","title":{"rendered":"Nasdaq gets approval from SEC to list Bitcoin index options"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By <strong>Bernard Goyder<\/strong>, Bloomberg<\/p>\n<p>The Securities and Exchange Commission has given the go-ahead for Nasdaq to list index options based on the price of Bitcoin, the latest sign that Wall Street is becoming more tightly integrated with the world of digital assets.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=461\">SpaceX launches its biggest, most beefed-up Starship yet on a test flight<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The instruments will give US equities traders an alternative way to bet on the price of the cryptocurrency, beyond options on the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF and similar funds.<\/p>\n<p>The derivatives were approved on an \u201caccelerated basis\u201d by the SEC, according to an order posted Friday on the regulator\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>The Bitcoin options will be cash settled European style options, meaning that unlike the options on Bitcoin ETFs, there\u2019s no risk of getting exercised if a position is in the money.<\/p>\n<p>While the options have received approval from SEC, they still need a final sign off from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission before they can be listed, according to the SEC order.<\/p>\n<p>The underlying index for the new options will be the CME CF Bitcoin Real Time Index, which updates with data from cryptocurrency exchanges every 200 milliseconds.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=459\">State health officials probe E. coli outbreak linked to Kebab Shop<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re far from the first Bitcoin options traded in the US. CME Group has listed options on Bitcoin futures since 2020. But the new Nasdaq-listed contracts would bring Bitcoin options into the equity market, potentially widening access.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The SEC\u2019s conditional approval \u201crepresents an important step in expanding regulated, transparent access to digital asset derivatives,\u201d Nasdaq head of US options David Barrett said via email.<\/p>\n<p>SEC Chairman Paul Atkins has been an enthusiastic proponent of expanding crypto trading in the US. The lion\u2019s share of crypto derivatives transactions remain on overseas bourses like Binance and Hyperliquid.
