Garlic lovers hoping to attend Gilroy\u2019s tribute to the stinking rose will need to act quickly to secure tickets for the Gilroy Garlic Festival, which runs July 24-26.<\/p>\n

The event, which was marred by tragedy in 2019, went on hiatus for several years before making a comeback last year at a new location, the Hecker Pass Outdoor Event Center near the Gilroy Gardens theme park, with a strict limit on the number of attendees each day.<\/p>\n

And that limit has nearly been reached. According to an update Monday from the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, a total of about 400 tickets remain for Friday, June 24, and\u00a0Sunday, June 26. Those must be ordered in advance; no tickets will be sold at the entrance. The second day of the event \u2014 Saturday, June 25 \u2014 is already sold out.<\/p>\n

Local residents got first crack at tickets to the world-famous festival, and they snapped up the bulk of them.<\/p>\n

The smaller festival will still boast a large Gourmet Alley, with the photogenic \u201cpyro chefs\u201d cooking shrimp scampi, calamari, pepper steak sandwiches, pasta con pesto and more. The wine and beer gardens will feature regional vintners and brewers. A full lineup of live music and other entertainment is planned, and vendors will sell arts, crafts, artisanal food products and festival merch.<\/p>\n

For more than 40 years, the festival that began in 1979 drew an attendance of around 100,000 every year, with foodies, garlic fanatics and famous chefs coming from around the world. The funding model, which relied entirely on volunteers and paid proceeds to nonprofit groups that staffed the festival, has given back millions to local non-profits and been much copied over the years.<\/p>\n

The last large festival held at Christmas Hill Park, the longtime venue, was in 2019. On Sunday, July 28, the final afternoon of the event, a gunman killed three people \u2014 Stephen Romero, 6, of San Jose; Keyla Salazar, 13, of San Jose; and Trevor Irby, 25, of Santa Cruz \u2014 and wounded 17 others.<\/p>\n

Efforts to bring back an in-person festival were sidelined by the pandemic and insurance liability issues. In 2021, a COVID-safe, drive-thru event was held, with garlic fans driving past the famous \u201cpyro chefs\u201d to pick up pre-ordered food.<\/p>\n

The new safety measures instituted for 2025 will remain in effect for this year\u2019s fenced-in festival. Those include additional security, metal detecting wands at entrances, and a policy that allows only clear bags.<\/p>\n
