LAS VEGAS \u2013 With the ball in his hands, Chance McMillian is quick. But unburdened by the need to dribble, the Warriors\u2019 summer league guard born and raised in Vallejo is a blur.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 25-year-old is a perpetual motion machine, zipping around the court in search of even the slightest sliver of open space. That is all he needs to get off a shot that he honed through thousands of hours making baskets growing up in the East Bay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But this summer, a year removed from ankle surgery that cost him all of summer league as a rookie, McMillian comes to Vegas with an opportunity to show he deserves a role on the Warriors, the team he grew up rooting for. McMillian even went to a Steph Curry camp as a youngster back when Curry was just a rookie in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 6-foot-3 guard is now bent on proving that he can be a point guard a la his other idol, Baron Davis. It is a role he played at both St. Patrick-St. Vincent and later Bethel as a 3-time Tri-County Athletic League MVP as a prep star, but one he put away to shine as an off-ball threat at the collegiate level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTo be your primary ballhandler and just continuing to build on my quick decision-making, and obviously being able to knock down the open shot would help too,\u201d McMillian said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So far, he\u2019s off to a great start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

McMillian scored in double figures in all three California Classic games before scoring four points in the Warriors\u2019 101-90 victory over the Mavericks in the Las Vegas opener.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Along the way, McMillian has played with the kind of patience and poise as a point guard. That is not by accident.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

After recovering from his ankle injury, McMillian spent the entire season in Santa Cruz, where he averaged 5.1 assists per game as G League staff transformed him into a floor general.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Summer league coach Khalid Robinson has seen those hours in the gym pay off during the July exhibitions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe staff did a great job with teaching him how we want to play, with spacing, making good decisions, and he had a full season of doing that,\u201d Robinson said. \u201cI think he\u2019s done a very good job of carrying over the things from Santa Cruz and the postseason into the summer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

With Pat Spencer off to Phoenix and several roster spots still open, there is an opportunity for McMillian to earn a two-way contract with the Warriors, or remain in Santa Cruz in case Golden State needs to call a player up.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most common plays in the Warriors\u2019 playbook is running guards like McMillian off split cuts, asking a frontcourt player to make the pass to the guard zipping into position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In many instances, the passer has been second-year center Lachlan Olbrich. Having already played 37 NBA games as a rookie, the Australian big man was confident in his assessment of Chance\u2019s skillset.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe can score the ball at all three levels, and he\u2019s an agile, quick guy,\u201d Olbrich told the Bay Area News Group.<\/span><\/p>\n

McMillian is adamant that his future is as a point guard at the next level, referring to his improved handle as his tricks that he has stashed away but are ready to be used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But at the same time, the Vallejo native also admitted that at the end of the day, his smooth jumper is his key to staying in the NBA.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy biggest asset is shooting, so I will definitely play to my strengths,\u201d McMillian said.<\/span><\/p>\n
