OAKLAND \u2014 The 2023 Oakland police academy valedictorian was given a risky undercover assignment last year: pose as a sex worker in a part of town known for human trafficking, robberies and violence, and wait for a buyer or a pimp to accost her.<\/p>\n

During the October 2025 sting, Officer Sandria Bolden was allegedly approached by a suspected pimp, who pulled up in a 2006 Subaru and promised her a taste of his \u201clavish lifestyle\u201d if she decided to work for him. Instead, the 28-year-old Vacaville resident, identified in court papers as Kumari Daniel Johnson, was arrested on felony charges, court records show.<\/p>\n

This year, Johnson was charged with attempted pandering by encouraging. The charging records say he has four prior felonies, including a robbery charge and two for evading police. Johnson has pleaded not guilty.<\/p>\n

Initially freed on $50,000 bail, Johnson was arrested last month after failing to appear at a scheduled court date. He was freed after a new bail was set at $20,000 and is next due in court on Thursday, records show.<\/p>\n

The charging records allege that Bolden signaled for uniformed officers to come and detain Johnson after he approached her. He was stopped on International Boulevard, near 18th Avenue, and arrested, court records show.<\/p>\n

Oakland police have tried variations of different undercover schemes to curb human trafficking and prostitution, including posing as underage trafficking victims online, setting up fake prostitution ads and busting people who arrive at hotels to answer them, or posing as johns in open air sex markets.<\/p>\n
