{"id":3438,"date":"2026-07-01T06:38:02","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T06:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=3438"},"modified":"2026-07-01T06:38:02","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T06:38:02","slug":"mexico-ends-a-40-year-knockout-drought-beats-ecuador-2-0-to-reach-the-round-of-16","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=3438","title":{"rendered":"Mexico ends a 40-year knockout drought, beats Ecuador 2-0 to reach the round of 16"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<p>By CARLOS RODRIGUEZ<\/p>\n<p>MEXICO CITY (AP) \u2014 Juli\u00e1n Qui\u00f1ones and Ra\u00fal Jim\u00e9nez scored goals in a nine-minute span in the first half and Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 on Tuesday night to break a 40-year drought without a win in the knockout stage and progressed to the World Cup round of 16.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextcitydigest.com\/?p=3436\">Sharks\u2019 new 7-foot defenseman makes even Jumbo Joe look small: \u2018He\u2019s huge\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Qui\u00f1ones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute while Jim\u00e9nez added a strike in the 31st minute for the Mexicans, who had not won a knockout-stage match since defeating Bulgaria in the round of 16 when they hosted the tournament in 1986.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico subsequently lost seven consecutive times at that same stage from 1994 to 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In Qatar 2022, they were eliminated in the group stage for the first time since Argentina in 1978.<\/p>\n<p>It was Qui\u00f1ones third goal of the tournament and he is now El Tri\u2019s second-best scorer in World Cup history behind Luis \u201cMatador\u201d Hern\u00e1ndez and Javier \u201cChicharito\u201d Hern\u00e1ndez, who scored four each.<\/p>\n<p>Jim\u00e9nez scored his second goal of the tournament and has 47 with the national team to break a tie with Jared Borgetti. Mexico has just two official losses at the venue \u2014 the last being a World Cup qualifying defeat to Honduras on Sept. 6, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>With the win, Mexico extended its unbeaten run to 12 games, dating back to a friendly loss against Paraguay in November. <\/p>\n<p>Mexico also became the first CONCACAF side to eliminate a CONMEBOL side in a World Cup knockout match. Teams from South America won the previous five meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Ecuador was trying to advance to the round of 16 for the second time in their history and the first since Germany 2006.<\/p>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The match started one hour after the original scheduled time due to a thunderstorm.<\/p>\n<p>It was the second match of the tournament affected by weather.
