Rainbow exhibit closes at Whitney Modern<\/h4>\n

After a monthlong run that coincided with Pride, the \u201cRainbow\u201d exhibit at Whitney Modern will close at the end of June.<\/p>\n

\u201cRainbow\u201d was conceived by Marie Cameron, a Los Gatos-based artist and guest curator at Whitney Modern. The exhibit features over 130 works by artists from around the world.<\/p>\n

Cameron came up with the idea during the pandemic, as protests over the murder of George Floyd spread across the country and wildfires raged across Northern California. Looking for connection, wonder and joy, she said she found inspiration during a dark day at the beach, where she saw a rainbow stretching from the clouds.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just all very hard to see the rainbow in the world,\u201d Cameron said. \u201cSo I was thinking that if I could find a way that in my art, it would be a really healing kind of way to deal with the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron began embroidering sheer silk rainbows onto vintage photographs of firefighters, nurses, redwood forests and beaches, using the images to represent prayers and hope for the future. She shared the work on social media as a way to spread joy and connection, then began compiling a list of artists who used rainbows in their own work. That list eventually became the \u201cRainbow\u201d exhibit.<\/p>\n

Among Cameron\u2019s favorite works in the exhibit are \u201cSpringtime Flush,\u201d a ceramic rainbow by Houston artist Angel Oloshove, and pieces by Oakland-based artists Alicia McCarthy and Bob Stang.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, rainbows are like poetry in the sky, and we love them because they\u2019re ephemeral and unexpected and they disappear so quickly, so we don\u2019t take them for granted, and it\u2019s like us,\u201d Cameron said. \u201cThe whole point is to experience the joy and wonder while we are here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Los Gatos celebrates Independence Day<\/h4>\n

Los Gatos will celebrate the Fourth of July with its annual \u201cSymphony in the Park\u201d event at Oak Meadow Park.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include music, food, family activities and a patriotic program.<\/p>\n

Mayor Rob Moore will welcome guests at 10:45 a.m. and recognize the Veteran\u2019s Memorial & Support Foundation of Los Gatos. The American flag will be raised during the national anthem.<\/p>\n

At 11 a.m., the Los Gatos Liberty Bell will be rung and the children\u2019s bike and stroller parade will begin. The San Jose Wind Symphony will perform from 11:15 a.m. until the end of the program, with an intermission at 11:45 a.m.<\/p>\n

Attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and lawn chairs. Kona Ice, The Waffle Roost, Chula Puebla and Billy Jones Snack Shack and BBQ will provide food and concessions. The event also will feature a carousel, inflatables, a beer and wine garden and rides on the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad.<\/p>\n
