To step back in time to a vintage American downtown, one need not go far from the whir of high-tech Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n

Nestled into the Santa Cruz Mountains just 20 minutes from downtown San Jose, Los Gatos offers colorful shopfronts, historic buildings and antique charm.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s quaint,\u201d said Ferrah Mckeown, a 49-year-old Los Gatos resident walking her dog downtown while waiting for her son\u2019s football game to start at the high school. She compared the town to Stars Hollow from \u201cGilmore Girls\u201d or Mayberry from \u201cThe Andy Griffith Show.\u201d \u201cYou always tend to run into somebody that you know.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday mornings, the streets are bustling. Shoppers carry flowers wrapped in newspaper or fresh vegetables from the farmers market. Cyclists lean their bikes against the trees lining the street as they pop into cafes. Runners veer off of Main Street to pick up\u00a0the Los Gatos Creek Trail.<\/p>\n

As night falls, a new wave of downtowners takes over: couples and families, groups of friends meeting for dinner at the town\u2019s numerous restaurants, drivers showing off their classic cars.<\/p>\n

But its location on the edge of Silicon Valley guarantees that it\u2019s not some throwback American small town, either. Phil and Melanie Branon, both 72, have lived in Los Gatos since 1984, and laud the town\u2019s diversity and vibrancy.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can walk down the street any given day and hear a number of languages, which always just really surprises me,\u201d Melanie Branon said. \u201cI grew up near New York City, and I\u2019m used to that in a big city, but we get that here, and I think that\u2019s really impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike some cities in the Bay Area, Los Gatos\u2019 downtown has \u201cmaintained a great sense of community,\u201d said Phil Branon.<\/p>\n

Los Gatos, which has retained much of its old-town charm, was incorporated in 1887, but the roots of its downtown area were sown even earlier: John W. Lyndon purchased 100 acres in 1868 and began to develop the area with the construction of a bank, a gas company and a cannery. Many of the original buildings built on Main Street burned down in a fire in 1901, and others were damaged in the 1906 earthquake.<\/p>\n

Still, many of the buildings on Main Street and Santa Cruz Avenue have a long history; an aerial photo taken in the 1960s and showcased in the New Museum Los Gatos shows many familiar facades, though a spot that now features upscale shopping was instead occupied by a lumber yard.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs far as I can remember, it\u2019s always been the same little downtown,\u201d said Maria Gonzalez, 52, who has lived in Los Gatos for most of her life. \u201cIt\u2019s gotten a lot more crowded, but it\u2019s still the same nice place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Betty Young, 84, and her daughter Marge Poytress, 55, visited Los Gatos on a sunny March weekend from their homes in Redding, drinking lattes outside Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company, where Poytress bought a bag of Terry\u2019s Blend coffee beans to bring back to her husband, who grew up in the town.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI just love this place,\u201d said Young.<\/p>\n

Young grew up in Santa Clara in the 1940s and \u201950s, and can recall when the valley was filled primarily with fruit orchards. Los Gatos looks the same, she said, but unlike today, it used to be surrounded with orchards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was Old Town, just like this,\u201d she said of the surrounding streets. But beyond that? \u201cOrchards everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

To start the Los Gatos adventure like a local, begin with a hike, walk or ride on the Los Gatos Creek Trail, with the trailhead located in the heart of downtown. On weekends, the trail is bustling. For David Wooden, a 45-year-old resident of Los Gatos, it\u2019s a Monday ritual \u2013 he\u2019s there walking four-and-a-half miles, followed by a Tuscan sandwich at Mr. Pickle\u2019s Sandwich Shop.<\/p>\n

As she prepared to embark on a weekday walk, Gonzalez said that the trail is a \u201cvery unique\u201d part of the town\u2019s landscape.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s right off of downtown, and then you can have lunch afterwards, so it\u2019s really nice,\u201d Gonzales added. \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful view when you get to the top, and then, if you go through the middle of the mountains, they have these big rocks. It\u2019s just beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The town\u2019s culinary options, spread across downtown, offer the visitor variety, whether it\u2019s grabbing a quick lunch after a hike or looking for a sit-down date night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mom-and-pops here in Los Gatos really go out of their way,\u201d said Glenda Crespo, 53, who was staying in Los Gatos with a friend. \u201cThey take the time to talk to you and you know them and they know you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though small, the town boasts restaurants serving a wide range of cuisines. The options are \u201cexpansive,\u201d said Phil Branon.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou find all kinds of cuisine around here. There is Oren\u2019s Hummus, there is Thai food, there is Indian food, \u2026 Mexican food,\u201d said Rose Sokhanvari, a 63-year-old resident of Los Gatos. \u201cName it, you\u2019ll find it.\u201d<\/p>\n

University Avenue takes the adventurer to Old Town, home to a Spanish-style shopping center with high-end destinations for homeware and clothing: Anthropologie, Sephora, Warby Parker. Main Street, home to attractions such as Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company, Zona Rosa, Parkside Los Gatos and more, is a \u201crestaurant haven,\u201d Melanie Branon said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have our favorites, and it feels very neighborhood-y,\u201d said Melanie Branon. \u201cYou\u2019ll know some of the waiters or waitresses or bartenders, and that\u2019s kind of special.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Los Gatos Coffee Roasting Company is usually packed despite recent damage from a car crashing into its front. On a Sunday morning, the line stretches all the way to the door as waiting patrons eye a display case filled with baked goods, shiny with glaze. In the evenings, live music plays.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s always a nice go-to, and you can get your cup of coffee and run into somebody you know,\u201d Mckeown said.<\/p>\n

The shoe store Athletic Performance has been a staple of Main Street for 36 years\u2014hikers and runners are known to lace up their new shoes and go directly to the trail. Tyler Harmatz, 33, whose dad co-founded the store before he was born, is now a co-owner of the store and said an active lifestyle is a core part of Los Gatos\u2019 culture.<\/p>\n

Santa Cruz Avenue is perhaps the center of it all, with clothing shops, restaurant patios and an art deco-style movie theater. Featuring walls lined with portraits of movie stars from the golden age of Hollywood, the theater boasts two screens and a balcony overlooking downtown.<\/p>\n

A Barnes and Noble recently opened on the street, bringing a bookstore back to the town, in a \u201crebirth,\u201d Melanie Branon said. Even at 7 p.m., people fill the store, browsing for their next read.<\/p>\n

Britt Tapella, a resident of San Jose in her 40s, works at Bunches, a small flower shop filled to the brim with cut flowers. The shop, which has been there for 34 years, gets many regular customers, plus the weekend tourists visiting and orders from out of state.<\/p>\n

Working in a small town comes with its charm compared to the bustling big city next door, Tapella said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have everything at your fingertips \u2013 eateries, coffee shops, shops,\u201d Tapella said. \u201cYou literally have all of it in just a very close walking distance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andal\u00e9, a Mexican restaurant, has two locations across the street from each other on the main drag. Mercedes Ampie, a resident of Los Gatos, has worked for the restaurant\u2019s various locations for 13 years and said people in town are very kind and that the summers are bustling with customers. The best dishes at Andal\u00e9 are the salmon, the carnitas and the al pastor, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe try to make the food fresh,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The town is known for its dog-friendly ethos, with pooches allowed to join their owners in many stores and on restaurant patios \u2013 though it\u2019s all a bit at odds with the town\u2019s name, which translates to \u201cthe cats.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sokhanvari stopped for lunch on Andal\u00e9\u2019s patio with her dog on a Monday afternoon. She goes to the restaurant regularly and enjoys their salads, especially the grilled salmon salad, and their burritos.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can just walk down here, and there is a little bit of everything you could possibly want \u2013 there are restaurants and bars and coffee shops, a movie theater, galleries, great beer places,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s just very friendly.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Los Gatos\u2019 downtown is tucked only a few miles from the bustling tech hub of San Jose, it feels \u201cfar removed,\u201d Mckeown said \u2013 \u201ca nice escape from reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have this beautiful backdrop as well,\u201d Mckeown said. \u201cI remember someone saying to me once that it reminded them of Tuscany.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t need to leave Los Gatos,\u201d she added. \u201cWhat more could you ask for, really?\u201d<\/p>\n
