SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 Following heavy usage in recent days, right-hander Keaton Winn is headed to the 15-day injured list with a right elbow strain.<\/p>\n

Winn\u2019s stint on the injured list is retroactive to June 11. Right-hander Tristan Beck has been called up to take Winn\u2019s roster spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was sore yesterday playing catch,\u201d said manager Tony Vitello. \u201cI know he\u2019s frustrated because he wants to go, but the pitching guys were down there with him when he was playing catch and had him see the trainers. So, probably best for him to get a reset here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vitello said he doesn\u2019t think Winn\u2019s injury is \u201canything too crazy\u201d when asked about the severity of the strain, adding that he believes Winn won\u2019t throw for \u201ca handful of days at the most.\u201d Winn underwent an MRI, per Vitello.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he\u2019s in a fairly good spot,\u201d Vitello said. \u201cLike I said, more than anything, mentally, he\u2019s a little frustrated. He wants to be out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vitello had leaned on Winn in recent games, calling on the 28-year-old right-hander for three straight games on Saturday (six batters, 22 pitches), Sunday (five batters, 19 pitches) and Monday (six batters, 22 pitches).<\/p>\n

Winn blew a save on Monday, his third straight game on the mound, by allowing three runs to the Nationals in the top of the ninth. The righty also recorded a five-out save against the Brewers on June 3.<\/p>\n

That usage is heavy for any reliever but especially Winn, who has dealt with elbow issues in the past. Winn missed the 2021 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, then underwent season-ending ulnar nerve transposition surgery in his right elbow in July 2024.<\/p>\n

When Vitello was asked if he had handled Monday differently considering Winn\u2019s recent usage and injury history, Vitello responded, \u201cI think more than anything, we just wish we would\u2019ve done anything different to win the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, anything we got a guy that\u2019s available down there, it means he\u2019s available to go and feels good to go,\u201d Vitello continued. \u201cThere\u2019s been days where he\u2019s come in the office and said he\u2019s not available and doesn\u2019t feel his best so we\u2019ve stayed away from him. But, like I said, anything from that game as far as memories go \u2014 or playing Monday morning quarterback \u2014 is would\u2019ve liked to have done something different to win the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not uncommon for relievers to communicate if they\u2019re unavailable for a game due to usage, but Vitello noted that Winn didn\u2019t say he couldn\u2019t pitch on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnytime we get to the meeting where we talk about who\u2019s going to pitch and what scenarios and all that, that was what we had talked about at the end of the game: If we get to him, that\u2019s who we\u2019re going to use,\u201d Vitello said. \u201cSo, anytime we go through that scenario deal where we kind of play pop quiz, it\u2019s who\u2019s available and who\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vitello added, \u201cHe\u2019s had days where he hasn\u2019t felt great and days where he\u2019s slower to bounce back. He went out there and threw yesterday. He just doesn\u2019t feel like he\u2019s bounced back the way that he needs to in order to (pitch).\u201d<\/p>\n
