According to CalMatters, former DA Pamela Price’s staff found that 30 of 35 death penalty cases that they investigated were worthy of resentencing. Alameda County Superior Court Judge Thomas Stevens had reviewed 20 of those when DA Jones-Dickson took office, and he approved every one. Of the 10 that were left pending, our new DA withdrew four from consideration. She also disbanded the resentencing team.

For DA Jones-Dickson, justice apparently need not extend to victims of our flawed judicial system.

Jean Moses
Oakland

District’s rushed hiring doesn’t instill trust

Two principals in two years. Here’s how to handle one” (May 26).

Americans saved only 4.4% of their disposable income in 2025, far below countries such as Sweden. The reason is our lack of financial education.

Money is treated as a taboo topic from a young age. Bankrate reports that 61% of U.S. adults feel uncomfortable discussing their bank account balances even with close friends or family. When adults avoid conversations about money, students grow up without the skills they need.

California’s law, AB 2927, requires a personal finance course for high school graduation. However, being a student in Fremont Unified School District, I still see gaps. One of my peers recently spent $600 on a casual mall trip after completing a finance class, which shows that a single senior year course is not enough to build strong habits.

Financial literacy must begin earlier. Middle school is a critical time for forming habits. Schools should introduce consistent financial education long before graduation.

Baidehi Roy
Fremont

‘Monuments’ show Trump is out of touch

First, let me say that I have seen nothing to indicate that Donald Trump has a sense of humor — nothing.

Therefore, reports from various media on June 3 that he was considering leaving the 90-foot-tall UFC arena being constructed on the White House lawn in place permanently must be considered accurate. That appalls me. It completely undermines his argument for increased security funding for the ballroom. With the UFC arena in place, Marine One cannot land at the White House, so the president must motorcade to Air Force One anytime he flies in or out of Washington, D.C. Talk about an enhanced security threat.
