OAKLAND \u2014 A man with six prior felony convictions who also was once shot by Fremont police was charged Monday with murder in the recent fatal shooting of a beloved 33-year registered nurse and father, who was killed in a downtown parking lot.<\/p>\n

Shacory Daniels, 39, of Vallejo, is charged in the killing of Lartey Solomon of San Leandro. He is also charged with shooting at an unoccupied vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of ammunition by a prohibited person. He was arrested Thursday in Menlo Park and is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.<\/p>\n

The shooting happened about 2:46 a.m. May 31 in a parking lot in the 1400 block of Harrison Street.<\/p>\n

Police said Solomon had been at a club in the area and was returning to his car when he was shot multiple times. He died later at a hospital.<\/p>\n

Investigators have not been able to confirm a motive for the shooting or said if Daniels and Solomon knew each other.<\/p>\n

According to court records, multiple semi-automatic pistol shell casings were found at the scene. Through witness statements and video surveillance, it was determined that the shooter emerged from the driver\u2019s seat of a black Volkswagen Jetta with a distinctive broken headlamp, the records say.<\/p>\n

Police learned the Jetta\u2019s license plate through the use of license plate reader technology, then determined that Daniels was driving the car the day of the shooting, the records say. Police also confirmed he was near the parking lot in downtown Oakland on the morning of the shooting, the records show.<\/p>\n

Authorities later found loose ammunition at Daniels\u2019 home that appeared similar to casings found at the shooting scene, records show. Investigators also found\u00a0a box for a stolen similar handgun, as were additional firearms, according to the records.<\/p>\n

After his arrest he confirmed the Jetta was his, but told investigators he could not recall if he was in downtown Oakland the night of the shooting. He then asked for a lawyer, the records say.<\/p>\n

An online fundraiser has been established by Solomon\u2019s family for his funeral, to return his remains to his native Ghana and to support his daughter and father. The family said they had \u201cexperienced a loss that words can hardly describe,\u201d and described him as \u201cour beloved brother, son, father, friend, and nurse.<\/p>\n

\u201cLartey was a bright light in the lives of so many,\u201d the fundraiser page reads. \u201cYoung, energetic, and fun-loving, he had an infectious smile and a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, valued, and loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fundraiser said Solomon was born and raised in Ghana, eventually emigrating to the United States, attaining a nursing degree from Samuel Merritt University. Solomon worked as a registered nurse at Alameda Health Care and Kindred Hospital in San Leandro.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a nurse, caring for others was more than a profession\u2014 it was his calling,\u201d the fundraiser said. \u201cHe was passionate about educating people on their health and empowering them to make informed decisions about their well-being.<\/p>\n

Solomon\u2019s family said that his death has left an \u201cunimaginable void in our hearts.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was generous beyond measure, quietly supporting family members, friends, and others both at home and abroad. Helping people came naturally to him, and he gave without expecting anything in return.\u201d<\/p>\n

As of Monday morning the fund had raised $1,969 toward its goal of $20,000. Those wishing to donate can access the fund at gofund.me\/d44c77ddc.<\/p>\n

According to court records, Daniels\u2019 six prior felony convictions happened between 2007 and July 2020 in Alameda, Contra Costa and Orange counties. They include two convictions for evading a police officer, one for pimping, another for dissuading a witness from testifying, false imprisonment by violence and possession of a firearm by a felon. <\/p>\n

His most recent conviction resulted from a 2018 case when authorities said he was shot after ramming multiple Fremont undercover police cars, as officers tried to arrest him in a string of car burglaries across the Bay Area.<\/p>\n

Daniels later pleaded no contest to evading a police officer, court records show, in a deal that saw prosecutors dismiss numerous other charges, including second degree burglary of a vehicle and four counts of assault on a police officer. He received a three-year probation sentence in the case, according to court records.<\/p>\n

Yet Daniels\u2019 telling of the 2018 encounter proved far different \u2014 instead suggesting in a 2020 lawsuit that it was he who was rammed by undercover officers in unmarked police cars, not vice versa. The lawsuit targeted a Fremont police officer, after Daniels said he was shot by the cop while trying to flee \u201cin fear for his life,\u201d the filing said.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit \u2014 which was filed in federal district court \u2014 claimed none of the police officers activated their lights or sirens before ramming Daniels\u2019 car, and that \u201cthe majority\u201d of the officers on scene that day did not activate their body-worn cameras during the incident.
