For the past 41 years, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has only had one CEO: Julie Packard. The daughter of Silicon Valley pioneer David Packard and a marine biologist, Packard converted a former World War I-era sardine factory on Cannery Row into one of the most successful and respected aquariums anywhere in the United States, if not the world.<\/p>\n

The sleek facility, famous for its sea otters, jellyfish and \u201cSeafood Watch\u201d program used by millions to make informed choices at the grocery store, draws 2 million visitors every year \u2014 more than the annual home attendance of the San Francisco 49ers, Golden State Warriors and San Jose Sharks combined.<\/p>\n

Last month, Packard retired, while remaining on the aquarium\u2019s board. She is succeeded by Jenny Gray, who worked for 17 years as CEO of Zoos Victoria, a nonprofit organization that operates the Melbourne Zoo and other wildlife centers in Australia. Gray has master\u2019s degrees in business and engineering, and a doctorate in ethics from the University of Melbourne.<\/p>\n

This conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity and length.<\/p>\n

Q<\/strong>: When was the first time that you visited the aquarium, and what do you remember?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> I was studying at the University of California, Berkeley campus, doing my master\u2019s in transportation engineering. Over spring break, about eight of us jumped into two cars and drove down the coastline. When we got to Monterey, we visited the aquarium. It was 1989. I was absolutely mesmerized at the sardine tank \u2014 that column of water with fish swimming around in it. I remember just being really engaged with the whole experience.<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t seen anything like the kelp forest either. And then, years later, of course, we saw it being copied all over the world. It was a phenomenal exhibit.<\/p>\n

Also, the storytelling struck me: This idea of a place that was part of the fishing industry that now talks about conserving the ocean. It was clever. I was already a scuba diver. I loved it. As a diver, I had spent a lot of time learning the names of fish and learning how they behave. To do that while you\u2019re warm and dry is quite different from doing it while they\u2019re all trying to get away from you.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Why do you think the Monterey Bay Aquarium has become so popular?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> I used to say that Zoos Victoria had more members than the four biggest football teams in the area combined. Places like aquariums show us something different about nature. It\u2019s always live. It\u2019s always changing. It\u2019s not static.<\/p>\n

Every single experience you have will be different on the day you visit. The kelp tank will be different if the sun\u2019s shining or not. The different time of day will give you a different experience. And you\u2019re looking at something real, not a screen.<\/p>\n

For parents, taking their children out of the house and having them run around looking at real things, that sparks curiosity. Particularly in difficult times, people return to places that they love. They return to places that inspire and give hope, because we\u2019re looking for that in our daily lives.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

A:<\/strong> In terms of exhibits, do you have any thoughts of things that you\u2019d like to add?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> Absolutely! A whole lot. But I am on day eight today. So I would be remiss to rush in and say all my crazy ideas. But I think we\u2019re going to have a lot of fun. Ocean conservation has never been more important.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Given your long history with zoos and aquariums, what can be improved upon at the Monterey Bay Aquarium?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> At the moment, I\u2019m doing walking and listening tours, going out with different teams. Yesterday, they had me deep in the basement.<\/p>\n

The engineering kid in me just loved it. This aquarium is a remarkable piece of work. The way it was conceived 40 years ago, the way the water moves, the way we pull really nutrient-rich water out of the bay to feed life forms inside is incredible, and it allows us to look after a very wide range of different creatures. So before I would even think about offering solutions for change, I want to understand it. They are world leaders here for a good reason. They\u2019re incredible. There won\u2019t be Earth-shattering changes. Nothing\u2019s broken here. In fact, the exact opposite.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> What do you think is the major challenge facing the world\u2019s oceans right now? And what do you think is an area where trends are improving?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> The major challenges are around overuse. And so Seafood Watch is an incredible resource to help people understand that there\u2019s not a limitless supply of food out of the ocean, that we need to be careful about what we use and when we use it.<\/p>\n

As a positive, the team here has worked on bluefin tuna, and we have been able to help turn around the population. What\u2019s great about fish is they actually recover quite quickly if you protect the right places, if you protect the breeding grounds, if you protect mature adults.<\/p>\n

But the big threats are pollution \u2014 whether that\u2019s plastic or other pollution \u2014 and climate change, and over-exploitation of the ocean itself.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> You have a doctorate in ethics, focused on issues involving wildlife. Is there a conflict between the quality of life for individual animals in captivity at zoos and aquariums and the goals those institutions have to inform and inspire the public toward conservation?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> We have to be good at both. I don\u2019t think we can do one at the expense of the other. At Zoos Victoria, we often worked with critically endangered species where there are very few left. When there are very few left, if you do things that are bad for an individual, you actually can crash the whole population.<\/p>\n

I think we stop too soon when we say it\u2019s OK to penalize some individuals to save other individuals. Why penalize any? It is not a given that a life in captivity has to be a bad life. We should ask ourselves every single day how do we make the lives better for those animals who live in our care?<\/p>\n

How do we make sure that the life they have with us is as good as it possibly can be? And the more we do that, the more they\u2019re going to breed, the longer they\u2019re going to live. What\u2019s good for the individual is also good for the species and conservation.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Do you have a favorite animal at the aquarium?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> Right now, it\u2019s the Giant Pacific Octopus. She\u2019s absolutely a heart-winner. And incredibly charismatic and tactile. She will come over and try to touch you and work out if she likes you or not. She is huge and really amazing.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> Polls are showing that one of the main concerns that Americans have right now is affordability. A ticket to the Monterey Bay Aquarium now costs $65 for adults and $50 for children. That\u2019s higher than most U.S. aquariums. Do you have any thoughts about that when people are concerned these days with economic anxiety?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> You know, we certainly offer opportunities for those who are not able to afford the price, particularly through the \u201cMuseums for All\u201d program (which provides free admission to people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits \u2014 known as CalFresh in California). For people who are really struggling, there\u2019s a way that you can still come out and enjoy the aquarium.<\/p>\n

Distance is another barrier. It may be that in good times, you would have gone to Florida on your holiday, but you\u2019re not going to go away every holiday this year. So we would encourage that you make a day trip. Summer\u2019s here. You\u2019re going to need to do something with your kids. Bring them down to the aquarium and have an incredible day. Enjoy Cannery Row. Enjoy Fisherman\u2019s Wharf. It\u2019s not just an aquarium. It\u2019s a whole outing that you\u2019re going to be doing, and it\u2019s beautiful to stand on the back deck and watch the otters playing in the ocean that we\u2019ve protected for so long.<\/p>\n

We think the aquarium is a value for the money and for the experience. And while it\u2019s expensive compared to other aquariums, it is significantly better.<\/p>\n

Q:<\/strong> I suppose it\u2019s also less expensive than amusement parks like Disneyland and most sports tickets.<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> If dad is going to the World Cup, it\u2019s only fair that everyone else comes to the aquarium, right?<\/p>\n

Q<\/strong>: Is there anything else you would like the public to know?<\/p>\n

A:<\/strong> The aquarium is not world-leading by mistake. It is beautiful. Californians should be rightly proud of this institution and of the work it\u2019s been doing. Just to spend a day immersing yourself in the beauty of our oceans, it\u2019s a day well spent.<\/p>\n
